As a proud partner of Sisters with a Stethoscope (SWAS), we are thrilled to introduce you to this fantastic organization committed to bridging the gap between Black women and the field of medicine.

Kendra and Hailey, having grown up to their dream and passion of becoming medical doctors, and after learning that only 3% of doctors in America are African American females and 2.4% of doctors in America are Hispanic females, decided to create ‘Sister With A Stethoscope’, to provide an opportunity for middle and high school girls of colour to embrace, welcome, and participate in healthcare professions so that just like them, there can be more black doctors, black healthcare professionals, and black surgeons in America. According to a report by the National Library of Medicine, black Americans make up about 13% of the US population but comprise only 5·4% of the physician workforce, and of these, only 2·8% are Black women. This is supporting evidence of the problem SWAS is providing solutions for. Through ‘Sisters With A Stethoscope’, Kendra and Hailey hope to close the gap between minority female representation in medicine and other racial groups.

SWAS call their members “sisters” because they are passionate about community and a sense of belonging. Recently, they’ve expanded their community to include a new division for international sisters. This new initiative aims to connect with sisters abroad and provide valuable resources on various STEM and healthcare careers.

Makers Day with Sisters With A Stethoscope

Sisters with a Stethoscope participated in Makers Day, a global event celebrating creativity, innovation, and STEM education at the local library. This event brought together passionate individuals and organizations dedicated to fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics among young people. The team led a workshop on the basics of medical science, including anatomy, first aid, and health technology. They also talked about a few women leaders, shared their journeys and inspired young girls to pursue careers in science and technology.

Community Outreach at Local Hospitals and Cancer Clinics

In their last community outreach, Sisters with a Stethoscope visited local hospitals and cancer clinics to spread a bit of joy. They shared personalized cards with patients, offering words of encouragement and support. This gesture not only lifted the spirits of many but also underscored their commitment to compassionate care and community involvement.

We are excited to do this journey with Sisters with a Stethoscope and through this partnership, we hope to have more Black kids embrace medicine and other health professions, and we encourage you to explore the many opportunities they offer!
