27 Apr WAAW Mentorship for College Fellows With Ms Ekene Kayode
On the 24th of April, WAAW College fellows had an impacting and helpful session with Ms. Ekene Kayode, the president/principal consultant of Hankuri Data Solution Inc. The Session was themed “Managing yourself and Leading Others”.
Ms. Ekene who Is also the Founder/CEO of EWAD Inc. and a 2020 WAAW Foundation Scholarship Donor has an M.Sc in project management and is PMP, ITIL, and SAFe Certificate. She has over 20 years of experience, including 14 years of program/project management experience spanning IT data management, operation and software application support, and vendor resource management, the majority of which has been in oil and gas.
She shared her professional experience and tips on how the college fellows can manage themselves and lead others. She talked about how she got her first job as a GIS (Geographic Information Systems) intern at an environmental consulting firm in Lagos in 1998 and how she helped develop a digital mapping model focused on oil spill contingency planning for oil and gas industry in Nigeria. She also stated that in 2010 she was leading all of the GIS activities in support of the response and restoration from the largest oil spill incident in history; the BP Macondo spill which occurred in April 2010. She also explained to the college fellows on how she worked on that project for 5 years until the cleanup was completed. According to her she pursued and completed her master’s degree in project management while working on the Macondo response
In October 2015, Ekene decided to do something that she had always wanted to do for a long time, which was starting up her own IT Consulting firm called Hankuri Data Solutions. Her was main focus was to provide IT program and project management delivery solutions to a variety of fortune 100 companies.
In 2018, she had the privilege and honor of founding a non-profit organization called EWAD Inc. which stands for Empowering Women of African Descent. She explains that EWAD provides an opportunity and vehicle through which she can give back in partnership with like-minded women and organizations such as WAAW Foundation to other women as well. She said in her journey so far she was able to discover herself and know her strength although despite all her fears she has been courageous.
College Fellows were excited to have learnt from her wealth of knowledge. They expressed their gratitude and appreciation.
