STEM Outreach & Mentoring Program

The WAAW Foundation Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) outreach program was launched in 2013. This program aims to train and equip the WAAW Foundation Scholars or college volunteers to launch and organize STEM outreach chapters within their Universities. The STEM chapter leaders recruit other STEM fellows and organize outreach and mentoring programs to 3-5 neighboring public Secondary schools in their communities to promote STEM education and learning amongst secondary students especially girls.

The overarching goal of this program is to bridge the secondary school to college continuum for STEM and Computer Science in Africa and to ultimately increase the pipeline of African girls entering STEM careers. The STEM Chapter project recruits, trains, equips and facilitates a chapter consisting of 5 – 8 African University students to provide STEM tutoring, computer science training, and mentoring to public secondary schools in their communities.

WAAW currently operates 31 STEM chapters in 13 African countries, with over 400 college fellows. The chapters impact over 10,000 youth each year.
