Lagos WAAW Team receives Simi (2019 WAAW Scholar)

It was all fun today when the WAAW Team hosted Ojolo Simileoluwa Johan, a “2019 WAAW Scholar” at the Lagos Office.

Simileoluwa, a WAAW Scholarship awardee, is a 300 Level Student of the University of Lagos, studying Civil and Environmental Engineering. She is a high spirited individual, who has excelled through her studies up to the University with full passion and enthusiasm for Science Technology Engineering & Maths and aiming towards redefining the African Women in Tech narrative.

As a woman, I want to be a force to reckon with in the area of civil engineering in Nigeria which is a male-dominated field. It is no more news that women are often sidelined in the field of engineering in sub-Saharan Africa, and this is largely a result of the orientation passed along from many years that only men should do the ‘heavy’ tasks. This is evident in the fact that many parents buy dolls as toys for their girl child while boys are given little machines and tools to play with.” says Simileoluwa

While receiving her the Executive Director, WAAW Foundation, Tolulope Adeyemo encouraged her to be a good ambassador of WAAW Foundation and ensure that this opportunity accorded her counts. Stressing that Simileoluwa is now part of WAAW Foundation efforts at reaching out to other girls, encouraging them to embrace STEM and becoming Leaders in the society.

She is equally optimistic of the social repositioning that this opportunity will bring to her; “The WAAW Foundation scholarship will provide a framework for me to learn from the Team at the Foundation and also enhance my knowledge in becoming an impactful leader that creates positive change for women in Africa especially in the area of Science and Engineering.

Simileoluwa pledged that; as a recipient of the WAAW Foundation scholarship, she will be an ambassador towards the implementation of the Foundation’s Values, Mission and Vision for the African Women.
