How You Can Make A Difference in Someone’s Life Through a Nonprofit

For those of us with a roof over our head and job and education opportunities available, we may not realize how lucky we are compared to others in the world. Many people are living in impoverished countries, and don’t have an opportunity to advance their education or get vital job training skills. Giving back to others is important, and even a small amount can make a huge impact on someone else’s life. It creates a change in the world through supporting nonprofits and educational programs.

Many companies actively have programs in place to give back to others. Doctors Without Borders helps people around the world in areas where the need is greatest, providing emergency medical attention to those suffering from epidemics, disasters, or turmoil. The American Red Cross is one of the first on the scene when disaster strikes around the world, providing food, water, shelter, and medical care to those in need. With millions of people donating money, blood, or their time, they’re able to help in critical times.

The nonprofit Kiva has made an incredible impact on people’s lives. Their program allows those in rural communities to get help with starting a business or completing their education in remote areas of the world. Conflict zones are also targeted to allow the citizens to restart their economy after their world has been turned upside down. To help, you can go online and choose who you want to help based on how much they need and for what cause, lend them the money, and then get paid back as the person you helped out succeeds with their goal. It’s quite an empowering system.

Another program giving back is the WAAW Foundation. WAAW (Working to Advance Science and Technology Education for African Women) Foundation is an international non-profit organization that was founded in 2007. Their mission is to increase the pipeline of African women entering into Science and Technology fields and ensure they are engaged in Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship to benefit Africa.

Their goal by 2025 is to increase the number of African women in STEM by 10%, and build female technology innovators who create 10,000 jobs to impact their communities. An impressive 90% of participants enter and stay in STEM fields after going through WAAW’s program. Each camp ends with dozens of young women’s lives changed. One such camper, Uwana, stated the following about her time at camp:

“I feel that this camp has completely changed who I am. It has given me more confidence and a new look at the technology world. It is an eye opener for me and it got me quite excited about my career in engineering. I will definitely recommend this camp to others because you get to meet so many new girls your own age and plus, you have so much fun learning new things that by the end of the day you are disappointed that it is over.”

With so many girls like Uwana having such an impact from programs like WAAW, it’s important to keep them up and running for future African women coming through the program.

Make a difference in someone’s life and consider supporting this great program by donating here to start making a change today.

Have you ever volunteered or donated to a non-profit before? Which type of organization that gives back appeals the most to you?
