There is always more to learning than knowing, this was the experience from the three days WAAW foundation’s AWELE (African Women Engineering Leadership and Entrepreneurship) Academy coding training workshop that was held on the 23rd, 24th and 25th day of November 2016.

AWELE Academy focuses on Technology Leadership and Entrepreneurship, and provides Coding Boot camps, STEM and Computer Science camps, short classes and workshops for African girls and youth. AWELE Academy is part of the Working to Adavance STEM Education for African Women (WAAW) foundation, a non-profit organization whose mission is to increase the pipeline of African women entering into Science and Technology fields and ensure they are engaged in Technology innovation to benefit Africa.

This workshop had several fun activities sandwiched between coding exercises which made coding even more fun for participants.

The facilitators treated many crucial aspects of coding in a very practical method, project focus teaching motivated participants to code. This workshop was a full package as it featured HTML, CSS, JavaScript and MIT app inventor; an app developing applications for Android phones.


The workshop was a unique blend of IT skills dispensed with a specialized WAAW foundation curriculum; very practical and engaging with highly experienced facilitators, exceptional training method and well maintained interactive workshop sessions. Some of the expected outcomes of the workshop included knowledge advancement, youth engagement and skills acquisition towards competitive employability skills, creativity and self employment.


This immense coding workshop was opened to both beginners and professionals from diverse fields looking for opportunities to take closer look at coding, widen their horizon and help them become architects and builders of this digital age, so to speak. In addition to the workshop sessions, coding materials were provided for self help purpose and continual development.

Participants had the most fun exploring endless possibilities with the MIT mobile app inventor, developing both complex and simple application as well emulating them on their mobile devices; what a fun way of acquiring technical know-how.

In similar vein, applications are now open for AWELE’s Academy “She Hacks Africa.” This is a three-week intensive programming workshop (Monday – Friday, 9:00 a.m – 5:00 p.m) in Abuja, Nigeria. Participants will be tutored on Full  Stack  Web Development. including HTML, CSS, MySQL, PHP and Linux, Responsive Design, User Experience, Dev Tools, Agile, Version Control and lots more. Side attraction includes Career Fair, Motivational Talks, Games, Excursion, Dancing and more fun.

The workshop cost N80,000 (with limited scholarships available) and venue is #2, Zambezi Crescent, (NEPZA Building, 3rd Floor), Maitama, Abuja, Nigeria.
