The Next Einstein Forum (NEF) celebrates Africa Science Week 2019 in Nigeria. The African Science Week was funded by Next Einstein Forum, an initiative of the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS) in partnership with Robert Bosch Stiftung and Johnson & Johnson and hosted at the Nile University of Nigeria.
In Nigeria, the event was coordinated by the African Centre for Innovation and Leadership Development (ACILD). This year’s event took place between Tuesday, October 8, 2019, and Thursday, October 10, 2019, and had over 300 students from 27 public secondary schools and 5 private secondary schools in Abuja, Nigeria. Students participated in series of events where they learnt how to appreciate and tackle challenges in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and related discipline, and designed to educate the students on the role they are expected to play in building a sustainable society.
The African Science Week event was a 2-day training, participating students are trained on different STEM-related courses such as Robotics, Digital electronics, Arduino Programming, Renewable Energy, Game design & Animation and 3D printing. Students from different schools compete in the Robotics Competition and Coding Challenge.
WAAW Foundation collaborated to facilitate STEM and Digital electronics sessions on Arduino Programming and Renewable Energy. During the workshop, WAAW Foundation was paired with secondary school students and teachers to explore and experience some science and computer programming experiential learning process, and to create and instill innovative skills among secondary school students and to create a truly meaningful and sustainable program that encourages entry and retention in STEM fields, especially for girls.
On October 8 – 9 2019, WAAW Foundation facilitated sessions with a group of students on Renewable energy and Digital electronics using Arduino. The renewable energy session was facilitated by Lucy Ikpesu Ewhubare – WAAW Program Manager; this session was on generating electricity from solar and wind energy (wind turbine). At the end of the solar and wind energy session, students were able to generate electricity that could light an LED bulb, pump water using the pressure pump and charge a phone.
The computer programming session was facilitated by Miriam Aboh – WAAW Volunteer. She introduced the students to Arduino, fun and innovative approach for programming Microcontrollers. With the Arduino board and other hardware, traffic light and a push-button LED circuit was built as a mini-project built by the students.
The students are very excited to learn as we took them through Science in a Fun and practical way how they could immediately relate every session to everyday life, have seen possibilities to use that knowledge to solve real-life issues.
