2019 SUMMER CODE SCHOOL WAS A SUCCESS

One of the hallmarks of the 21st century is the degree of advancement of technology. Technology has been integrated into almost every sector from automobiles to the smart home. Basic knowledge of technology will soon be required to work in any field. All these machines and innovations are programmed using codes. Coding is basically the language used to speak to our technology/machines. Computer software, apps, and websites are created using coding. In recent years coding has become a rudimentary skill. It is important to bring coding to the children so that they can compete in this new and fast-paced world.

WAAW (Working to Advance Science and Technology Education for African Women) Foundation, an international non-profit organization, established to increase the pipeline of African women entering into Science and Technology fields, is geared towards introducing STEM education to the average child. We believe in inspiring children to develop an interest in coding.

In light of this, WAAW Foundation designed a summer code school for both boys and girls of ages 5 years to 17 years, attended by 19 students from different private and public schools across Nigeria. The summer code school was super as we had 6 hearing impaired students from Government secondary school, Kuje Abuja sponsored by Include Me Africa Initiative, an organization whose mission is to leverage youth action and partnerships to influence social change that advances the rights and capabilities of persons with disabilities across Africa.

The training is a practical and hands-on introduction into programming language using Java, website development, games, basic design techniques, 2D & 3D modeling, renewable energy and so much more. The purpose of the workshop is to spike the interest and teach the kids concepts of coding and computer programming, website development, robotics, animation, renewable energy and hands-on fun activities that develop their thinking abilities and creativity. It has been an exciting experience to see the children’s imagination and creative abilities come into full bloom in the 3 weeks span of the program. The children are encouraged to explore the possibilities of tech and STEM in the new age. The training is a stepping stone to building the future.

Summer Code School which held in Abuja City, from 13th – 30th August and in Lagos from 19th August – 6th September 2019 with 17 kids in total in attendance. The Kids were Introduced to Programming using Blockly games, Web Development (Using HTML, CSS & wix), 2D animation Using SCRATCH Programming, 3D modeling and printing, Programming Microcontrollers Using Arduino, Renewable Energy from Solar and Wind, MIT Mobile APP Inventor and Team-building.

The children were introduced to programming using fun games and hands-on activities on a daily basis. Each day was a different experience as they learnt new and exciting things like creating animations, creating websites, controlling hardware components and various sources of Renewable Energy. They also made use of the knowledge they gain to create projects and their understanding is assessed through their performance in the projects.

The children present their projects to their parents at the end of the programme and are awarded certificates for the awesome job they did.

The parents were amazed by the great effect the Code School had on their children. Most of them commented on how much the students learnt and how amazing what they learnt was. The children finished our code school with a brand new understanding of technology and a desire to go further in the programming world.
