03Stop Western Aid to Africa - Build up Entrepreneurship

Recently, there has been an increased call to stop Western aid to Africa. With the 2010 World Cup taking place in South Africa, more light is being shed the continent's economic growth.

According to Naspers Chief Executive Koos Bekker, the best way to ensure entrepreneurship in the continent is to cut off Western aid, ending the begging bowl mentality common to certain African nations. Economist and author Dambisa Moyo echoes the same sentiment. According to Moyo, aid does not equal tangible evidence of sustainable long-term growth. Instead of foreign aid, Moyo asserts that Africans need trade and training.

Here at WAAW Foundation, we firmly believe that training and especially female education along with science and techonology innovation will enable Africa can complete globally. Studies continue to show that female education is the best investment in developing nations and that technology innovation is what attracts capital financial investments. WAAW Foundation’s focus on educating girls in Africa is strategic, aimed to building capacity and ultimately enabling tangible development to African economies.

Following our strategy, WAAW Foundation is building a portfolio of industry partners who are interesting in engaging in African markets. Through participation in our Women of Technology Conferences, we give our partners the necessary local content, access to highly skilled capacity, tools and knowledge to successfully grow or expand their enterprises in Africa. This is a call to local and international technology companies who are interested in engaging in and expanding into African markets to partner with us as we grow human capital and technology capacity that will help them engage with local communities.

According to WAAW Foundation’s Chief Operating Officer, Jean Ngoroje, “Considering that the mobile telecommunications industry has grown 550% since 2003, and the significant increase in the manufacturing sector as well as a growing middle class in many African countries, high-tech companies and investors should be taking a hard, strong look at doing business in Africa. The first step in this process is participating in capacity building through our work at WAAW Foundation”. Partner with us to support WAAW Foundation's mission to educate and encourage African girls to explore careers in science and technology.
