The African Union – International Centre for Girls and Women’s Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) is a specialized institution of the African Union since 2004 dealing with women and girls’ education in Africa. The second edition workshop of the African Union – International Centre for Girls’ and Women’s Education in Africa (AU/CIEFFA) on “Youth Capacity Building Workshop on Girls’ Education: Entrepreneurship, Coding & STEM” was held from 20-23 November 2018 at Hammamet, Tunisia.
The overall objective of this second workshop is to strengthen the knowledge of 60 young Africans from 45 Africa countries (North-Africa, South-Africa, East-African and West-Africa), equip them with innovative techniques related to ICTs, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and boost their entrepreneurship potential. The opportunity of this capacity building session will be given to girls and young women from different countries, as well as vulnerable and/or persons living with disabilities to be trained in these areas. Programs of the workshop were packed full with fun and innovative activities including practical coding sessions, Entrepreneurship with focus on STEM and TVET, panel discussions and scientific tour in Tunis.
WAAW Foundation represented by our STEM Trainer Lucy Ikpesu-Ewhubare who facilitated a coding and robotics session during the AU/CIEFFA workshop on Scratch and mBlock programming using mBot robot. Scratch is a programming software tool designed for learning important strategies for solving problems, designing projects, and communicating ideas using codes. With Scratch programming, one can program your own interactive stories, games, and animations as well as share your creations with others in the online community. It uses the drag and down interface to build programs that is, instead of typing lines of text, as you do with traditional coding, you drag colour blocks and join them together to build programs.
mBlock is also a drag-and-drop graphical programming tool developed based on scratch2.0. It allows users to quick way to learn programming, read sensor values, control the output of hardware modules and realize multiple functions from the (mBot) robot. mBot is an all-in-one solution to enjoy the hands-on experience of programming, electronics, and robotics; working with mBlock inspired by Scratch 2.0, connecting with computers or smart devices via Bluetooth or USB cable, this easy-to-assemble and provides infinite possibilities for you to learn STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Participants were excited as they built a game called “Falling Fruits” using scratch programming software and mBlock programming software to program the mBot (robot) using the line-follower.
