Science fair projects are one of the most anticipated parts of the school year for many children. Kids get to really think outside the box and let their creative sides shine through. Back in the day, creating an exploding volcano made out of baking soda was exciting, but now some truly unique projects are coming out of science fairs today.
Here are some of the most creative projects we found around the world:
Fireworks in a jar – This experiment is a pretty simple concept, but has very colorful results. Food coloring is put in a jar full of water along with oil. When everything starts to combine, it “explodes” by expanding and mixing with the other colors.
Walking on eggs – While this may sound daunting, it’s very possible to do! Put multiple cartons in a path in front of you and slowly step on each one. The key is to evenly distribute your weight on each carton of eggs per foot.
Water cycle in a bag – In this experiment, a ziploc bag is filled ¼ of the way with water with a few drops of blue food coloring in it. The bag is closed, taped to the window, and observed for a few days. When the water gets warm from the sun, it evaporates into a vapor, and as it cools off it changes back into a liquid, like a cloud would do. When the air can’t hold it up anymore, it falls down through precipitation.
Osmosis with gummy bears – Gummy bears are put in different solutions, including milk, salt water, plain water, sugar water, vinegar, and baking soda water. After 12 hours, they’re checked on to see what happened. They all have completely different results, and give kids a nice visual of how different solutions affect the products in them.
Leakproof bag – A plastic bag is filled with water, and pencils are put through it without the water coming out. The trick to this is making sure the pencils are sharpened to a point, and the polymer chains will react to prevent water from leaking out.
These are just a few examples of how intellectual children in this generation are. They’re constantly questioning what they see and craving to learn more. By doing hands-on projects like this, they retain the information much easier and teach their peers in the process.
Having access to science is extremely important for children. They’re the future generation that will have a huge impact on the science field. Getting them curious now will shape their interest in the future to constantly push boundaries and make new discoveries.
Technology has already dramatically improved our way of life. We need to make sure children have all the resources they need to grow and think creatively. Consider helping out school programs that are lacking a science program so kids get the most out of school that they can. They are our future, after all.
